Asperger Triggers

What are Asperger Triggers?

This is a glossary of typical situations that trigger my Asperger's Syndrome symptoms. It's often hard to tell if what you're doing is actually bothering me because I've become so adept at hiding my true reaction. If you find I abruptly leave the room; make up an excuse to depart or change the subject then one the below situations has likely occurred.

Errant alarms seem to be more and more common when you go shopping these days. I'm not talking about the unmistakable fire alarm that can go off and scare everybody silly. I'm alluding to the annoying beeping noises that come from machines in a store like Ingles or Wal-Mart.

The Straw Pumper is similar to The Coffee Cup Clanker but this trigger is more motion based. It will usually be cocktail, shake or soft drink with ice. The offender will start bobbing the straw up and down in a repetitive motion.

Career coffee drinkers do this thing they are not even aware of. They stir cream and sugar into the cup in this loud clanking sound. There are two ways to stir coffee. Firstly, you can stir a really small circle in the middle of the cup, creating a whirlpool. Secondly, the more common way of stirring coffee is to drunkenly spin the spoon around the edge clanking and banging the porcelain edge as you go.

Most coffee drinkers don't' realize they're doing this. Some even like the sound as a kind of ceremony.

When the web first started in the 90's I had tremendous trouble with all the animated GIF files that would flash all over a web page. Now that the web has matured flashing ads are starting to become less prevalent.

Another thing along the same line that bothers me greatly is slide shows that move left-to-right (or vice-versa). Often times a site will feature stories with one of these things. As a developer I actually have to make these things for clients.

Touch

This one is a throw back to my childhood. I remember very clearly being in art classes and hating the feel of paste or glue. There were kids who liked to eat paste and I couldn't even touch it.

On just about every project I would almost throw a tantrum if I couldn't attach the paper with scotch tape. Many teachers got angry and made me use paste because it was stronger.

Typically this occurs when a woman is in the other car seat during a drive to a dinner or show. She'll be worred about her looks and begin furiouly brushing and rubbing at her face.

Thankfully most movies keep the kissing scenes down to a minimum. As you sit there and watch it it makes you realize how gross it is.

This is one I loath to admit because dogs are mostly fun to have around. Still they will often do this routine of cleaning their mouth or 'panting with a clicking sound' that doesn't sit well with me. Other times they will pick a spot either on their body or on the wall and just start licking incessantly

Sound

Most people don't realize it but they hum out of tune. It's probaby more about the vibrations they are feeling in their own body. I usualy can't stand to be near a humming person.

Ironically humming birds are actually a very wonderful sound to me.

In December, there's always this person in front of the department store ringing the bell for donations. Most people find this a tad annoying but I go into overdrive. During November and December I go to the store at 3am when the bell ringer is gone. If I were to try and enter the door during the day something terrible would happen. I would grab the bell and huck it onto the roof of the store. I would than likely attack the hapless recovering alcoholic whose duty it was to ring the bell.
