New documentary film "Neurotypical" hits Asheville

Original Story

It looks like I have another film to add to my list. Catherine Faherty“ of Asheville’s TEACCH Center says "Neurotypical lets people on the autism spectrum tell their own stories, as it interweaves the lives of a child, a teenager and an adult newly diagnosed with autism."

I'm espeically interested in the last case study of the "adult newly diagnosed" because that's how my life has unfolded. I visited TEACCH last year for the very same analysis.

I've watched other autism movies like "Mozart and the Whale" and "Temple Grandin" which have been quite powerful. It's not easy to watch yourself on the big screen. I had to stop Mozart and the Whale half way through to catch my breath and regroup.

My particual strain of autism is called Asperger's Syndrome which is actually harder than you would think to deal with. For the most part I'm expected to act normal because Aspergers is considered "light autism" that doesn't prevent you from holding down normal work, etc.  Still, I have trouble with certain sounds or movements. I have many of the social misfires thus, human interaction has never been easy.

With a fully autistic person it's usually obvious that they have a dehabilitating condition so it's easier to forgive them in day to day life. With Aspergers as an adult, you learn very well to hide it before you even know what you have. This very nature of hiding your actual symtoms makes most people quite uncomfortable during the times that you slip and let your guard down.
