Milk, Wheat and Aspergers Syndrome - more startling connections.
I came upon some extremely interesting information about the connection between milk gluten and Autism/Aspergers. There is still some debate on the issue, but in many cases taking out dairy and wheat from an Autistic child's diet is met with good results. Some people suggest it should be done with adult "Aspies" as well.
Studies show that autistic people have more trouble digesting these foods, and that it may be the cause of Autism in the first place. Milk and dairy in the from of casein and gluten actually act as opiates causing autistic people to crave more of what's poisoning them. It's interesting to me because I once was pretty strict on the Atkins diet and I remember feeling extremely focused and peaceful. Part of that is loosing weight, but I never made the connection of how badly milk was hurting me.
In later years, I cut milk out again and again and each time I felt great. Usually the push to quit was because of increased indigestion, but I never made a connection to autism or alergies. I can eat the stuff, but I feel lousy after. I get in ruts where I eat more and more dairy throughout the day and into the coming weeks. Before long I have no idea what is making me feel so bad ( I keep craving it). Milk is one of those things that people keep giving you in one form or another, so you eventually give up trying to avoid it. Now I have renewed motivation to quit all milk and wheat products and carefully study the results in relation to Asperger's Syndrome.
