Profound Thoughts

I've watched Mike Judge's Idiocracy several times now. It seems to keep getting better each time. The move is relevant to me because the fictional plot seems to be coming to life in modern day. Each day I read the news I'm astonished how real life is following the movie.

My wife and I have been married for 5 years now but I occasionally look back at how over-catered our wedding was. We were nearly broke at the time (come to think of it...we still are). Thus our wedding needed to get done for less than $1,000.

As a general disclaimer let me begin by saying that I don't normally want to murder anything or anybody. House flies, Gnats and Mosquitoes are the exception. I blame it on my Asperger's Syndrome which leaves me very shaken by certain sounds and tones.

I was given some information on Hydrokinetic energy after discussing the oil spill. This page has some very interesting observations about ways to get energy out of the ocean. Several of the devices like the "pass-over", "point absorber" or "water-column" appear to be quite simple and able to generate electric without disturbing sea life.

There's lots of debate on the oil spill of April 2010 and two distinct political sides are trading arrows, so if I make this introduction any longer than this, I'll loose half my audience after the first sentence.

Still, I had to reflect on reasons for using oil that I just don't think are good ones any more:

Several interesting articles and news videos like this one from the New York Times, floated the internet today. The subject mater was about China's buying spree for commodities. The worlds largest population is snapping up iron ore, oil, aluminum, copper, canola oil and soy beans to name a few.

Well, Micheal Jackson died last week, and I don't want to speak too badly about him, but I do want to rant and rave about the media circus that followed. An interesting article was posted at CNN about how the death of Michael Jackson nearly brought the internet to it's knees. Twitter went down. Micheal Jackson's fan site slowed to a crawl. CNN traffic was up six-fold.

This rant is almost a continuation of my other Carbon Footprints and Food post but it's also a indicator of how society is changing towards a reduction in cars.

I will try to contrast my life now compared to 1990 when I got my license. We're hearing every day on CNN about how the oil is going to dry up. In the mean time, prices continue to soar as many people refuse to change their lifestyle.

Many who know me often get a dose of my 'tread lightly and enjoy life' philosophy. I generally hate working for other people, no mater what it is, so I try any way possible to be efficient in my life.

My main motivation is to save money, but lessening the impact on our environment and resources is always an added plus.

The other day, several on Twitter floated an article from EcoGeek on the fact that Ace Hardware will be selling micro wind turbines for family homes. Around 6 grand will get you one of these suckers installed on your roof right next to all the bird poop.
